The figures disclosed here show that the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) has already paid a staggering £145,896.48 for legal representation and advice in the Luba Macpherson case before the Court of Protection.
This sum does not include additional costs such as:
- Court fees
- Judicial time
- Prison or detention costs
- Administrative costs incurred by HMCTS and other government agencies
When these are factored in, the total taxpayer bill will likely be considerably higher — potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Given the scale of public spending, serious questions need to be asked about whether this represents good value for money and whether more efficient, proportionate solutions could have been found earlier in the process.
